Metro Health and Wyoming’s Southern Area
By Dan | September 11, 2008
I am amazed of all the recent growth in Wyoming’s southern half once Metro Health Hospital moved in. Actually the growth has been showing up before Metro Health started building there and it has turned out really nice. A bunch of new shops specalizing in coffee, breakfast, pizza and health care has really made that area very, very nice.
I remember when I was growing up, Byron Center was just a road connecting the towns of Wyoming and Byron Center. Times sure have changed! Once the new M-6 highway was finished, Byron Center Rd. became a destination for many people to get onto the new M-6 and even to grab a Pizza or even a movie rental.

I had the pleasure *Cough*Cough*to visit the New Metro Health area a few weeks ago. I accidentally dropped a steak knife off of my plate when I was cleaning the table after cooking food for my friends and it (turn away if your easily disgusted) stuck into my foot. I can laugh about it now because everything turned out fine, but I needed stitches in my foot – two to be exact.
Upon arrival at Metro Health I was treated very professionally and more important to me, fast. I arrived there, received two stitches in my foot, a tetanus shot in my arm, a prescription to treat any possible infection and some pretty cool sock/booties with rubberized grippy soles. I was out of there in one hour and fifteen minutes. Nice!
Here is a picture of the new hospital.

Thanks to all of Metro Health’s great staff (even you Vanessa!)
A trip today to the area showed me how much more there is around that area. As I drove through the streets connecting the Health Village to the rest of the world I saw some other great things.
Frog Hollow Play area:

I know it’s not much of a park. I hear little kids love it. But, noone was forced to put it there! I think it is a nice touch. Kudos!
Gezon Park. Sorry I don’t have a photo for you, you’ll just have to believe me it’s there. This is a fantastic park to watch kids play baseball, football and soccer. Located near Wyoming’s southern water tower just off of Gezon Parkway, It is a great local destination for any sports loving kid.
ITT Technical Institute:

I have no idea when this is going to be completed. It sure looks like it is close now. I can’t think why any school would be a bad thing for anybody! It is located on the southwest side of Metro Health Hospital, past Frog Hollow park and down a dead end road. ITT Tech may not have a football program but they sure do offer many options for some of our teenagers!
YMCA Spartan branch:

The YMCA has been serving up fitness goal to greater Grand Rapids for many years. Their program has 8-9 locations and the newest one is going to be built right of Gezon Parkway, across the street from Gezon Park. Scheduled for completion in 2010, I am sure this will be a great addition for almost anyone.
In addition to what I have mentioned above there are many other reasons to look at this part of Wyoming for your next move.
1) FOUR public golf courses within two miles, one private golf course within two miles.
2) TWO bike paths that could take you to Byron Center or to the John Ball Zoo. The newest one runs along the M-6 and will be much more challenging then the Kent Trail.
3) Rivertown Mall is a short distance away. Who doesn’t like shopping?
4) Unbelieveable quickness in jumping on the Highway and getting somewhere quick. The M-6 joins up with US131 and I-196
5) many other parks and shopping centers that I didn’t mention.
So to fellow First time home buyers, people relocating and others wishing to move to the southern part of Wyoming, MI: Give this growing area a thought. It could be a great move for you. There are many homes available right now within your price range!
